How to Navigate the Stress

of Pain – Part 1

Try this positive exercise to reduce stress right now.

Fresh energy for our resilience can come from how we navigate the different stressors associated with pain.

Especially when pain of any kind is overwhelming, one of the top stressors is a kind of paralysis in making decisions. “What do I do next?”

Take this stressor out of the equation: create a foundation for when you need this most. Make a list of at least three actions, emotions or thoughts you’ll focus on when you sense that stress of not knowing what to do next.

Three of my 20+ go-to next steps:

  1. Think of something I’m thankful for.
  2. Lift weights for one or two minutes (this works miracles).
  3. Type my thoughts and feelings into my iPhone note titled “PLAN TO BE YOUR BEST …As You Navigate Pain.” It’s a form of journaling, validating and giving voice to both what I’m experiencing and how I’m persevering.

Three Steps of Resilience

Do this when you need it most…

TUNE IN

Pause, take a deep breath or two, then understand and validate what stress you’re experiencing. In doing this you took the first and important step of being intentional.

PLAN

From your prepared list of optional actions, emotions or thoughts to focus on, which will you choose to do now, even if it’s something you’ll try; something you’ll test out?

BE YOUR BEST

You’re already redirecting your focus. Continue to take more control and follow through on your choice. Repeat this step multiple times if necessary. This is you being your best, and your best is greater than the pain.
